The Master of Health Science (Public Health Nursing [PHN]) program spans two academic years. Students first enroll in a one-year postgraduate diploma; after successfully finishing Year One, they can register with the NMBI as public health nurses. To complete Year One, students must fulfill 60 ECTS of theoretical coursework and meet clinical assessment requirements set by NMBI (2015). Upon completion, they receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences (Public Health Nursing), currently funded by the HSE.
After completing Year One, students may opt to continue directly into Year Two of the MSc program without obtaining the Postgraduate Diploma. To qualify for Year Two, they must achieve an overall grade of 60% or higher in their Year One modules. The second year is delivered by the University of Galway's School of Nursing and Midwifery and is not HSE-funded.
