This established MA in Social Work (MSW) prepares graduates with the expertise and practical training needed to qualify as registered social workers. Combining classroom instruction with hands-on experience, the program provides comprehensive insights into social issues, their root causes, and policy interventions. Participants develop competencies for working with individuals, groups, and communities, focusing on advancing human rights and social equity. With twenty years of collaboration with practice instructors and both public and nonprofit agencies, the program connects students to diverse social work settings serving individuals, families, and communities. Successful completion qualifies graduates for CORU registration as professional social workers. The curriculum features interdisciplinary learning with related fields (such as Social Policy & Community Development) and links to the Child and Family Research Centre, along with various research groups affiliated with the Life Course Institute. Faculty members across the School contribute significantly through teaching and guiding student research projects. The program also incorporates cross-disciplinary training with other academic departments (e.g., Health Sciences), practicing professionals, and service users.
Career Pathways
Upon graduation, students qualify for CORU registration and can pursue social work careers across public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Public sector employers include TUSLA, the Health Service Executive, local authorities, and government departments like Community Development and Justice. The NGO sector offers opportunities with organizations serving children and adults, such as Ability West, Enable Ireland, and COPE Galway. Alumni have secured positions internationally in countries including the U.S., Canada, and Australia. For continuing education, graduates may pursue advanced degrees (like PhD programs) or specialized professional qualifications, including the new Higher Postgraduate Diploma in Practice Teaching, Supervision and Management.
