The Master of Social Science (Social Work) (MSocSc Social Work) is a two-year full-time program designed for qualified graduates seeking a career in social work. This curriculum blends intensive academic training with hands-on fieldwork supervision, aiming to cultivate skilled, principled, and thoughtful social work professionals dedicated to advancing human rights and social justice. Graduates will: Acquire the essential knowledge, abilities, and ethical foundations for independent professional practice; Conduct social work with ethical awareness, championing social justice, human rights, and anti-oppressive approaches; Analyze and address the political, social, economic, and technological challenges faced in social work through innovative solutions; Master the core competencies outlined by the Social Work Registration Board, including professional accountability, interpersonal skills, communication excellence, continuous development, service quality, and comprehensive knowledge application.
Application for entry to the MSocSc Social Work programme is open to graduates who can demonstrate that they possess the following:
A minimum Second Class Honours (2H2) primary degree (NFQ Level 8) in social science or equivalent, with social policy as a major component. Graduates with a Level 8 degree in other disciplines who have completed a relevant conversion programme e.g. Higher Diploma in Social Policy may also apply.
A minimum of 420 hours of relevant and verified social work/social service experience, paid or voluntary, by the time they commence the programme
IELTS - 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each band; TOEFL internet-based test iBT: 90 with no less than 21 in writing and at least 19 in all other sections; Pearson Test of English - 63 with no less than 59 for each item in the Communicative Skills section; Duolingo English Test (DET) - 120 with no less than 110 in literacy, conversation, and comprehension subscores and no less than 95 in production. (This lower production subscore applies to non-EU applicants only), Cambridge Proficiency Cert. - 176+ on Cambridge English scale with no less than 169 in each skill and use of English. Proficiency Certificate, Grade C or better (CEFR Level C1 or C2); Cambridge Advanced Cert. - 176+ on Cambridge English scale with no less than 169 in each skill and use of English Advanced Certificate, Grade C or better (CEFR Level C1 or C2); ETAPP - C1 or better (CEFR Level C1 or C2); Oxford Test of English - 140 with no less than 125 in each skill; Trinity College London ISE - ISE III with at least merit in each skill category.
