The MA in Film Studies: Theory and Practice is an innovative program designed to equip students for diverse careers in cinema, scriptwriting, and media fields. Contemporary film presents varied professional prospects across academic circles, media production sectors, and creative arts management. This curriculum blends rigorous theoretical and historical film scholarship with practical components covering script development, digital filmmaking, cinematic pedagogy, and festival organization. The program maintains strong ties with Galway's acclaimed PALAS arthouse theater and the yearly Galway Film Fleadh festival.
Students can choose between an academic research track or hands-on filmmaking specialization, with the option to develop a full-length screenplay during their studies.
Professional pathways
Alumni have progressed to doctoral research and secured teaching and research positions in higher education. Others have established careers across festival management, media production, and journalism sectors, holding roles such as college instructor, TV content creator, publishing coordinator, filmmaker, editorial lead, reporter, educator, theater manager, and festival curator.
QQI Level 8 degree or equivalent, H2.2. GPA 3.0 or equivalent international qualification. Students who do not meet the honours degree requirement but have a Level 7 degree (Merit 1) may be admitted to the PDip course with the possibility of progressing to the MA if they receive a minimum of 60% in their course work during the year. Applicants are required to submit a writing sample, consisting of either a graded academic essay or a review essay of a recent film (1,000 words), and a personal statement with their application.
English Language Requirements
IELTS: 6.5 overall, no less than 5.5 in any one component; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88 overall (7 Listening, 16 Speaking, 18 Writing, 8 Reading); Pearson PTE: 61 overall, no less than 48 in any one component.
