This program was developed to address the growing need for nurses and midwives to prescribe medications, enhancing patient-centered care quality. The initiative stems from two pivotal reports advocating expanded prescribing rights for these professionals: the 1998 Commission on Nursing and the 2000 Review of Nursing and Midwifery Scope and Practice. These recommendations underwent thorough assessment during a three-year collaborative study by An Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann and the National Council for Nursing and Midwifery Professional Development in 2005, which endorsed extending prescribing authority. Subsequent implementation efforts in 2008 established necessary regulatory frameworks and support systems, with legal authorization granted by the Minister for Health and Children in 2007.
Nurses and midwives exercise their prescribing privileges within strict legal boundaries, professional guidelines, and their practice scope, with patient care improvement being the central objective.
The six-month curriculum includes an orientation day and ten workshop days (three per module), complemented by clinical mentorship. Participants complete 12 supervised prescribing sessions with an assigned medical practitioner throughout the program.
