Risk, resilience, and sustainability define our contemporary challenges. Grasping risk more profoundly—how it emerges, impacts societies, and is mitigated—is crucial for tackling urgent global problems. Government strategies often focus on critical infrastructure to confront worldwide threats like climate shifts, natural catastrophes, ecological instability, and severe social disparities. Sustainability principles are deeply embedded in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), serving as a universal blueprint for progress. This course examines how sustainability and resilience collaborate to protect ecosystem services, economic stability, urban development, transport networks, and governance structures.
Geography provides specialized knowledge about environmental risks (including earthquakes, volcanic activity, tsunamis, hurricanes, and floods) alongside societal aspects of risk management and sustainable practices, offering a multidisciplinary approach. It aligns with the School's mission to deliver innovative, research-driven education that fosters environmentally responsible solutions while confronting pivotal issues for planetary resilience.
