The School of Biology and Environmental Science (SBES) aims to strengthen its position as a premier European hub for comprehensive biological studies, investigating the mechanisms behind transformation through evolutionary and environmental lenses. Our research spans multiple scales - from molecular and genetic levels to ecosystems and landscapes. SBES's distinct advantage comes from our broad, interdisciplinary knowledge base, allowing us to approach worldwide issues with a multifaceted viewpoint.
We deliver cohesive scientific foundations to support environmental policies, sustainable practices, and industries reliant on natural assets like agriculture, forestry, and aquatic resources. Our team develops innovative approaches, frameworks, and technologies to solve complex problems. Additionally, we pioneer breakthroughs in cellular and molecular biology with direct healthcare applications, while examining Earth's biodiversity through an interdisciplinary lens. By refining genetic, evolutionary, and computational techniques, we enhance our comprehension of historical and upcoming planetary shifts, connecting these insights with current environmental studies to deepen our understanding of nature's systems.
Applicants for research degree should normally possess a first degree of at least an upper second class honours primary degree or the equivalent and/or Master's degree or its equivalent.
