The School invites applications from individuals interested in pursuing PhD or Research Masters degrees in sociology. We gladly accept proposals across all sociological fields where we can offer suitable guidance.
Our School offers dynamic and varied PhD and MLitt programs that have undergone significant updates in recent years. While new structured coursework components enhance professional development, the core focus continues to be students producing substantial, original research that advances sociological understanding.
The Sociology PhD requires completion of 270 credits, including 240 thesis credits plus 30 credits from coursework. Typically, this involves 4 years of full-time study or 5-6 years part-time.
For the Sociology MLitt, students must complete 180 credits, with 150 thesis credits and 30 coursework credits. This program generally spans 2 years.
Applicants must normally have a first or upper second-class honours primary degree and/or masters degree, or the equivalent. In circumstances where examination results are not known at the time of application, the School of Sociology may make a Conditional Offer subject to receiving a complete and final transcript confirming that the applicant has met the above requirements.
