Since 1973, the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering has investigated Communications and Signal Processing as a core research area. The group's methodology maintains an equilibrium between fundamental theoretical studies and practical applications.
Current initiatives span wireless and optical communications, addressing key areas including error-correcting codes, modulation schemes, wireless relay systems, diversity methods, and collaborative communication approaches.
The laboratory's applied achievements stem largely from its foundational theoretical breakthroughs. Algorithm development takes precedence over hardware design, leading to extensive utilization of simulation tools. The facility boasts exceptional simulation capabilities, supporting multiple platforms for both commercial and custom-developed software solutions. Some projects have also progressed to real-time hardware implementations.
In recent years, UCD's Communications and Signal Processing Group has played a pivotal role in helping prominent Irish firms develop robust DSP research programs, maintaining ongoing collaboration with these industry partners.
