Future PhD candidates should reach out to potential advisors to explore research opportunities prior to submitting their applications. Browse our faculty profiles to discover various research specialties.

UCD Philosophy offers a four-year, full-time structured PhD program. During the initial year, doctoral students must complete three graduate-level courses, with the possibility of taking up to two at Trinity College. Subsequently, they will work on an 80,000-word thesis with support from a supervisory committee. This committee consists of a primary advisor and two additional faculty members.

Students may alternatively choose to complete their studies sooner by submitting an MLitt thesis, which is shorter and has less demanding originality criteria.

Our PhD alumni have achieved notable career placements, securing positions in philosophy departments throughout Europe, North America, and Asia.
