The School invites applications from individuals interested in pursuing PhD or Research Masters degrees in sociology. We gladly review proposals across all sociological fields where we can offer suitable supervision.
Our School offers dynamic and varied PhD and MLitt programs that have undergone significant updates in recent years. These include new structured coursework components that enhance professional development, while maintaining a strong focus on students producing original, substantial research that advances sociological understanding.
The Sociology PhD requires completion of 270 credits, with 240 credits allocated to the thesis and an additional 30 credits for taught modules. Typically, this program spans 4 years for full-time students or 5-6 years for part-time study.
Applicants must normally have a first or upper second-class honours primary degree and/or masters degree, or the equivalent. In circumstances where examination results are not known at the time of application, the School of Sociology may make a Conditional Offer subject to receiving a complete and final transcript confirming that the applicant has met the above requirements.
