The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program provides a structured approach to advanced research training, enabling students to conduct in-depth investigations into specialized subjects while advancing knowledge in their discipline.
UCD's structured Ph.D. program:
maintains the core Ph.D. components of original research, knowledge creation, scholarly dissemination, and fostering academic independence
creates an environment for profound scholarly exploration, cultivating the analytical abilities and critical thinking required for academic research and scholarly work
allows candidates to present their final dissertation as either a traditional monograph or a collection of published articles (Ph.D. by publication)
Students may pursue the UCD structured Ph.D. either full-time or part-time. Full-time candidates typically complete the program in 9-12 trimesters (3-4 years), while part-time students require 15-18 trimesters (5-6 years). Each participant receives guidance from at least one faculty supervisor, with additional support from a dedicated research advisory panel.
Program Start Dates: January, May or September
