We aim to position the School as a premier European hub for integrative biology, investigating the mechanisms behind transformation from evolutionary, ecological, and societal viewpoints across various scales - from molecular and genetic to organismal, ecosystem, and landscape levels. Our objective is to solidify the School of Biology and Environmental Science (SBES) as a top-tier European institution for comprehensive biological studies, examining change drivers through evolutionary and environmental lenses at multiple biological scales. Our advantage stems from extensive interdisciplinary knowledge that allows SBES to approach worldwide issues with a holistic viewpoint.
We deliver unified scientific foundations to support environmental policymaking, sustainable practices, and industries reliant on natural assets such as agriculture, forestry, and aquatic fisheries. We develop innovative approaches, frameworks, and technologies to solve these complex problems. Additionally, we pioneer breakthroughs in cellular and molecular biology with direct healthcare implications, while investigating Earth's biodiversity through interdisciplinary methods. We enhance genetic, evolutionary, and computational techniques to interpret historical and projected global transformations, connecting this knowledge with current environmental studies to deepen our comprehension of nature.
Applicants for research degree should normally possess a first degree of at least an upper second class honours primary degree or the equivalent and/or Master's degree or its equivalent.
