Botany focuses on the scientific examination of plants, fungi, and algae. These organisms play a crucial role in sustaining atmospheric and environmental conditions essential for all terrestrial life. They form the foundation of human and animal nutrition while also supplying medicines, building materials, paper products, and textiles.

Vegetation is increasingly utilized for renewable energy and biofuel production, significantly contributing to climate change mitigation efforts. Advancing plant applications for practical or commercial purposes requires deeper insights into their metabolic and growth processes and how these interact with environmental influences.
