Microbiology focuses on examining microscopic life forms called microorganisms or microbes. These tiny organisms are crucial to all aspects of life on Earth. For instance, microbes significantly influence global climate through their processing of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. Naturally capable of generating polymers and antibiotics, microbes can also degrade various harmful substances. Scientists employ techniques including molecular biology, fermentation, enzymology, and synthetic biology to enhance microbial functions, enabling them to create novel antibiotics, eco-friendly materials, and remediate contaminated environments. Beneficial microbes shield us from harmful pathogens, though some can cause illnesses like MRSA, tuberculosis, and meningitis. Microbiology research strives to develop therapies for these and other infectious conditions.
