The Postgraduate Diploma in Planning and Sustainable Development provides an entry-level graduate program focused on urban, regional, and rural spatial planning. With a global perspective, it prepares students to address practical sustainability issues and environmental concerns encountered across public, private, and community sectors worldwide.
Our diverse student body brings varied academic backgrounds, creating a dynamic learning environment where participants can refine their interests into practical, ethical, and impactful career paths relevant to today's world. High-achieving students may advance to the second year of UCC's professionally accredited M.Plan program, a two-year master's degree aligned with European standards and international planning education frameworks.
This program especially benefits students from developing nations seeking fundamental training in sustainable development planning, as well as international students drawn to Ireland's educational offerings and planning methodologies. For those uncertain about committing to a full two-year accredited program, this diploma serves as both a valuable standalone qualification and an opportunity to evaluate their readiness for advanced study in the MPlan program.
Applicants must have a Second Class Honours in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) or higher, in an appropriate subject in Science, Arts, Humanities, Social Science, Law, Commerce, Health, Engineering or Architecture. Selection will be based on academic achievement, written expression of interest, an interview and relevant work experience (if any).
Applicants who do not hold a degree at Second Class Honours in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) may also be accepted under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) subject to the requirement that they demonstrate, at interview, a very high level of engagement and interest in the subject, a proven track record of significant experience in a relevant field, and a clear capacity for carrying out studies at postgraduate level.
