The MA in Irish Traditional Music offers comprehensive practical and theoretical training in both performance and academic study of this musical tradition. Drawing on world-renowned expertise, this flexible postgraduate program provides an immersive educational experience.
Students can customize their learning by combining foundational courses with diverse elective options. The curriculum includes masterclasses with faculty and guest artists, while encouraging scholarly work that incorporates approaches from ethnomusicology, musicology, and practice-based research.
The program features a Traditional Arts Internship for hands-on experience with cultural organizations, along with professional development courses to prepare for music careers. Building on over 100 years of leadership in Irish Traditional Music education, the department offers unique interdisciplinary perspectives by connecting with specialists across various musical traditions and research fields.
Applicants must have a Second Class Honours Grade 2 in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8), in music or a related subject (such as, but not exclusively, anthropology, folklore, or cultural studies).
