This program caters to graduates from other fields who wish to shift their academic focus to archaeology. Ideal for individuals passionate about archaeology seeking intensive full-time education, it also serves professionals already working in archaeological sectors who desire formal qualifications for personal growth or career advancement. The Diploma additionally functions as a bridge for those planning to pursue postgraduate archaeology studies at UCC, including the one-year MA program or MPhil/PhD research degrees. International students interested in studying archaeology in Ireland will find this program particularly suitable.
Spanning one academic year of full-time study, the curriculum comprises 60 credits worth of archaeology modules drawn from second and third-year BA degree courses. Participants will explore diverse topics from Irish prehistory through medieval and post-medieval periods, while gaining practical skills in various methodologies including bioarchaeology, osteoarchaeology, palaeo-environmental studies, palynology, and wetland archaeology. The program features a hands-on professional practice component with fieldwork, offering training in survey techniques through individual site projects. Artifact studies modules teach proper documentation and recording methods through project-based learning. Instruction comes from department faculty who are internationally renowned specialists, incorporating their cutting-edge research. Regular excursions to museums and archaeological sites complement coursework, exposing students to Ireland's rich archaeological heritage.
It is intended for those who already have a 3- or 4-year primary degree, preferably in the area of Arts or the Sciences, and who wish to study the subject of Archaeology intensively over one academic year. The Higher Diploma in Arts is a conversion programme and applicants would not normally have studied the relevant subject to Honours Degree level previously.
