At UCC, the Portuguese program offers an exploration of both the language and rich cultural heritage of Portugal and Lusophone nations through diverse mediums including literature, arts, theater, cinema, music, history, and media. Students start as complete beginners, with BA International students having the opportunity to spend their third year at Portugal's University of Coimbra. Small class sizes ensure interactive learning and active student engagement. Given its increasing global importance, Portuguese proficiency provides valuable career advantages in fields like business, engineering, translation, tourism, healthcare, and sports.
With over 200 million speakers spanning four continents, Portuguese ranks as the world's sixth most spoken language and the most widely used in the southern hemisphere. While native to Portugal, it serves as the official language of Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, and São Tomé in Africa. Recognized as an official EU language and used in MERCOSUR (the South American economic bloc including Brazil), Portuguese gains further significance as Brazil emerges as a global economic power, excelling in medicine, technology, and energy sectors. The country's global prominence was highlighted by hosting the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.
