Chinese Studies is an interdisciplinary academic area that combines elements from History, Linguistics, Political Science, Cultural Studies, and Translation Studies. This program concentrates on modern China and its development throughout the past century. Students gain a dynamic learning experience that prepares them to become globally aware individuals. The M.Phil. program enables students to explore crucial facets of present-day China, covering its political and economic systems, recent history, social dynamics, cultural trends, and language. With China's growing global influence, this program prepares graduates to meaningfully interact with modern Chinese society.
Due to its interdisciplinary approach, the course welcomes students from diverse academic backgrounds. For learners interested in mastering Mandarin—regardless of their initial proficiency—this program offers accelerated language acquisition opportunities.
Admission to this course is at graduate level, and applicants will hold a good honours degree (minimum II.1, or a GPA of 3.5, or equivalent from another country) from a recognised university. Applicants must also satisfy the University’s English language requirements. The course is designed for students from a wide range of backgrounds. A background in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is helpful but not a requirement. The M.Phil. in Chinese Studies is designed to provide a multidisciplinary introduction to the discipline of Chinese Studies without requiring any specific prior knowledge of China or Chinese language proficiency.
All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must present one of the following qualifications in the English language:
