The School of Genetics and Microbiology brings together the Smurfit Institute of Genetics and the Moyne Institute for Preventative Medicine, known for its dynamic educational approach and innovative research initiatives.
The Department of Genetics explores diverse research areas including cellular death mechanisms in cancer and immunity, vision-related genetics, evolutionary studies of genomes and proteins, neural connectivity, plant genetic modification, cancer-related gene activity, Irish population genetics, and bacterial genetics. Researchers operate from the state-of-the-art Smurfit Institute, which provides exceptional laboratory resources. Studies from the Smurfit Institute frequently appear in top-tier international publications, with many research teams recognized as global leaders in their specialties. The department currently includes 15 faculty members, 45 graduate students, and 35 postdoctoral researchers.
Postgraduate work in Trinity College Dublin is very academically challenging and as a result the University has high academic entry requirements. Applicants will need to hold at least a 2.1 honors degree from an Irish university or equivalent result from a university in another country; a fluent command of the English language. Display a high level of competence in the English language in one of the examination systems recognised by Trinity College Dublin.
