The School of Computer Science and Statistics runs a vibrant Ph.D. program with approximately 200 enrolled students. The program aims to cultivate world-leading research that creates measurable societal impact while preparing the next generation of researchers and academics.
Computer science research spans diverse areas from theoretical foundations to practical applications. Funding sources include EU grants, national organizations like Science Foundation Ireland and the Higher Education Authority, along with both local and international corporations. Faculty research encompasses: distributed systems featuring middleware and ubiquitous computing, artificial intelligence with focus on logic programming, neural networks and case-based reasoning, cognitive science, computational linguistics, natural language processing, computer vision and robotics, image processing, networking and telecommunications covering network administration, cybersecurity, e-commerce and mobile communications, computer architecture, grid computing, multimedia servers, computer graphics, image generation and animation, virtual reality, multimedia systems, information systems and management, ICT governance, health informatics, and formal verification methods.
Postgraduate work in Trinity College Dublin is very academically challenging and as a result the University has high academic entry requirements. Applicants will need to hold at least a 2.1 honors degree from an Irish university or equivalent result from a university in another country; a fluent command of the English language. Display a high level of competence in the English language in one of the examination systems recognised by Trinity College Dublin.
