History explores human experiences. By studying History, you examine lives, events, and concepts from eras and locations often vastly distinct from today's world. This discipline encompasses everything from the emergence and collapse of civilizations to revolutionary ideologies, as well as the diverse daily experiences of individuals across different periods and regions worldwide. Pursuing History cultivates analytical abilities, enhances clear communication of perspectives, and fosters independent learning.
Trinity's History department provides an exceptionally diverse curriculum despite its compact size. The four-year degree enables students to build strong foundations during the initial years through comprehensive courses covering medieval and modern periods, Irish, European, American, environmental and global histories, alongside methodological training. The latter half of the program offers specialized modules and opportunities for self-directed research on chosen topics. This combination of breadth and specialization makes Trinity's program unparalleled in Ireland and highly competitive globally.
Trinity ranks among the world's top institutions for historical studies. Our faculty members are published experts in Irish, British, European, and American history. We particularly value our distinctive small-group teaching approach, especially in the final years, and maintain a student-centered philosophy that prioritizes learning above all else.
Applicants must have completed a high school qualification equivalent to the Irish Leaving Certificate. General matriculation requirements include pass grades in English, mathematics and a language other than English. Additional requirements may apply for some courses.
