If you aspire to be Hollywood's next rising star and want hands-on experience in film production, this program isn't what you're looking for. Trinity's Film program emphasizes rigorous academic study – key courses cover Hollywood's cinematic history, non-Western film traditions, European cinema movements, Irish film culture, and digital image theory. You'll gain foundational skills in screenwriting and film production, working in writers' room settings and experimenting with smartphone filmmaking for short narratives. The curriculum also involves documentary studies, culminating in creating your own short documentary. In later years, you'll expand on these fundamentals through specialized courses while keeping a steady focus on both theoretical analysis and creative projects.
Film students frequently work alongside peers from other disciplines through joint modules and shared resources. They also actively participate in DU Film Society and contribute to the student-led Trinity Film Review. Many attend major film festivals like Berlin and Venice, while also hosting campus screenings and cinematic events.
Through our public 'In Conversation' lecture series, students engage with industry leaders. Past speakers have included Lenny Abrahamson, John Butler, and Emer Reynolds.
Applicants must have completed a high school qualification equivalent to the Irish Leaving Certificate. General matriculation requirements include pass grades in English, mathematics and a language other than English. Additional requirements may apply for some courses.
