Timber technologists are expert technical specialists who hold various roles within the thriving Forest Product Sector. According to Enterprise Ireland, employment in this field is expected to expand from 12,000 to 20,000 professionals over the next decade. This growth is fueled by rising emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly timber products, the expanding Irish timber harvest, and growing demand for premium wood products in Ireland and the UK. Our intensive, full-time program equips students with diverse skills and knowledge to thrive in this dynamic, expanding industry.
Timber Technologists are key players in transforming raw logs, thinnings, and wood fiber into high-grade timber products that meet strict technical and environmental requirements. These outputs include construction lumber and furniture-grade planks, wood pellets and fencing materials, as well as custom kitchens, mass-produced furniture, and exquisite handcrafted wooden items.
The TU838 BSc (Honours) in Sustainable Timber Technology has evolved from and replaces the previous B.Tech in Timber Product Technology. This immersive four-year program combines theoretical learning with practical skill development (see module details below). The curriculum aligns with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, directly contributing to several SDG Targets (including 9.4 and 12.2). Alongside core studies in wood science, timber processing, and production management, the program emphasizes transferable skills like analytical thinking, innovation, leadership, teamwork, and professional conduct. Strong industry connections provide valuable work placements during the sixth semester, complemented by field visits and expert guest lectures.
Students can tailor their expertise through elective modules, work experience, and thesis projects, creating a personalized skill set for their preferred career path in the Forest Products Sector.
