This two-year program offers a grounding in biological sciences (including biology and chemistry) combined with introductory ecology, environmental science, and earth science. It serves as a stepping stone toward level 7 and 8 qualifications in this field (particularly MT 880 Wildlife Biology) while also preparing students for direct workforce entry.
The curriculum blends theoretical learning with hands-on laboratory work and field activities. Weekly schedules feature a full day of fieldwork across various wildlife-rich locations in County Kerry and other areas. The first year establishes fundamentals in biology, chemistry, and numeracy, while the second year expands into botany, ecology, zoology, and microbiology. Students also gain practical experience in outdoor skills and Geographic Information Systems. The program offers a broad understanding of life's kingdoms, creating a solid foundation for specialized wildlife studies.
Exclusive to MTU Kerry Campus, this course draws students nationwide and internationally. Kerry's breathtaking and varied natural environment provides the perfect setting. Graduates acquire a valuable combination of biological and environmental expertise, applicable in both field and lab settings. Fieldwork locations encompass diverse wildlife habitats, conservation areas, and environmental management sites such as water treatment plants, wastewater facilities, and wind farms.
