Nautical Science encompasses three core components: navigation, cargo handling, and vessel management. This involves steering the ship, ensuring its safe operation while safeguarding lives and the environment, managing onboard administration, and overseeing diverse cargo operations - from petroleum and general goods to transporting thousands of vehicles or passengers.
This program prepares students for careers as deck officers, offering thorough instruction in navigation and maritime operations. After completing the first year, participants typically embark on commercial vessels during their second year, accumulating 12-15 months of practical sea experience required for the Department of Transport's Certificate of Competency and professional certifications. Students must also fulfill an extensive onboard training curriculum, maintaining detailed logs, journals, and other documentation as periodically required by the training program.
