The first-year program is identical for all computer science degrees at MTU's Bishopstown Campus. During this initial year, every student takes the same core modules, enabling them to switch to another department program in their second year - provided they meet the CAO entry criteria for their desired program upon enrollment at MTU Bishopstown Campus in Cork. This structure provides exceptional adaptability for eligible students considering program changes after their first year, allowing them to make better-informed choices after gaining initial academic experience.
Computer systems engineering integrates computer science, engineering principles, and mathematical analysis to design, test, and assess software for various devices. The curriculum covers essential concepts including computer systems fundamentals, embedded systems, systems programming, real-time operations, and contemporary computer architectures. Graduates emerge as skilled software developers with programming expertise, analytical capabilities, and hardware knowledge to build network, internet, and cloud-based applications. The program explores how smart devices, computers, and tablets interact with each other and their environment. Students develop problem-solving confidence by applying analytical and practical skills to investigate solutions, while learning to design the necessary infrastructure and systems to implement these solutions effectively.
