This MA program in French is tailored for graduates holding a primary honors degree in French (minimum 2.2 grade or equivalent) who have either completed a year abroad in France or possess comparable French language proficiency. Ideal for French graduates seeking advanced study of French language, literature, and culture, the program emphasizes substantial French-language instruction and assessment. Core curriculum focuses on French writing and presentation techniques, practical translation, and research methods, centered on the theme of writing and exile - reflecting the department's research strengths in both modern and early modern studies. Optional modules (taught in English) explore women's literature, translation studies, and conflict studies. Students complete a 15,000-20,000 word thesis through independent research under faculty supervision.
Candidates normally must have obtained at least a 2nd Class Honours Grade I in their primary degree, or equivalent (e.g. licence ès letters). It is expected that students will also have spent a minimum of 1 year in a French-speaking environment. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.
