Biotechnology examines how biological processes can be understood and harnessed for practical and commercial applications. This field investigates biological molecules, their synthesis, and production methods using living cells in culture systems. It encompasses modern molecular biology techniques such as recombinant DNA technology, antibody development and applications, and animal cell cultivation. The discipline integrates knowledge from genetics, molecular biology, immunology, microbial molecular science, biochemistry, and cellular biology. Your learning will be enhanced through hands-on lab work, industry visits, and potential placements with biotech companies (availability dependent). Taught by field experts, the program combines theory with practical experience, including laboratory sessions and industry exposure. You'll contribute to groundbreaking medical research, developing innovative treatments (such as cancer-targeting antibodies or vaccines against cervical cancer and hepatitis B), creating diagnostic tools for health monitoring, and advancing food production technologies. The curriculum covers diverse areas including genetic science, molecular biology, immunological studies, microbial molecular science, biochemical processes, and cellular biology. A transfer option exists from first-year MH201 Science to second-year MH202 Biotechnology for students completing Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics plus one additional subject with a minimum 60% first-year average. Limited places are awarded based on first-year academic performance.
