The LLM in International Human Rights Law is a full-time one-year or part-time two-year program provided by DCU's School of Law and Government. This program invites applications from individuals across Ireland, the European Union, and globally who are passionate about international legal systems for safeguarding human rights. Participants will explore human rights principles, international legal structures, and the impact of social movements and socio-legal theories on the evolution of human rights legislation. This curriculum equips learners for modern challenges, cultivating flexible, globally-minded analytical skills. Through this LLM, students gain profound understanding of legal perspectives on human rights while enhancing their capacity to evaluate human rights significance and the consequences of violations.

Qualification Requirements

For admission to the LLM in International Human Rights Law programme, successful applicants will have:

  • Normally have achieved a Second Class Honours Grade One (H2.1) in a primary degree (level 08) in law or an interdisciplinary degree which includes law as a significant component.
  • Applicants who have not achieved a H2.1 may apply but applications will be assessed on a competitive basis.
  • If an applicant has not yet completed their degree, then a conditional offer may be made on the basis of most recent grades and pending the achievement of no less than a H2.2 degree.
  • Applicants with appropriate combinations of professional qualifications and experience may also be considered. This includes discipline-specific knowledge and know-how; transferable skills; basic research competency; personal effectiveness.

English language Requirements

  • IELTS ACADEMIC - Overall score 6.5 or above, with a minimum of 6.0 in all components.
  • TOEFL - Overall score 580.
  • CBTOEFL - Overall score 237.
  • TOEFL iBT - Overall score 92 or above.
  • English Test for Academic and Professional Purposes (ETAPP) - C1
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CAP) - Postgraduate: Overall score of 180 with a minimum of 169 in all components.
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - Postgraduate: Overall score of 180 with a minimum of 169 in all components.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) - 63 with a minimum of 59 in all components.
  • Duolingo - Duolingo will be accepted with a minimum score of 120 and a score of at least 110 in each subscore.
