The MA and PhD programs in Theatre & Performance Studies focus on our shared passion for theatre, performance, and cultural politics
Our approach involves offering courses that examine performance both in theatrical settings and daily life, revealing its cultural, political, material, and ideological aspects throughout history. By analyzing performances in diverse contexts—from theaters and galleries to rituals, media, public spaces, political events, mass gatherings, and personal interactions—we uncover how performance can shape thoughtful responses to societal issues, fostering politically and ethically conscious public engagement.
Our specialized program areas, which guide our curriculum and degree requirements, embody this perspective. We promote interdisciplinary learning by encouraging students to take courses and collaborate with faculty from various fields such as Theatre Studies, Performance Studies, Anthropology, Business, Cinema and Media Studies, Dance Studies, English, Environmental Studies, Humanities, Gender, Feminist, and Women’s Studies, Nursing, Sociology, and Visual Arts. Students also gain hands-on experience through coursework, workshops, and departmental initiatives. Click here for more details. We uphold York’s mission to advance justice and sustainability through critical and creative exploration, inspiring our students to do the same.
