The program emphasizes musicology, ethnomusicology, and composition, with a strong focus on North American musical traditions while remaining inclusive of other styles. This encompasses jazz, urban popular music, sacred music, classical compositions, and both rural and urban folk music. Ethnomusicology, modern classical works, jazz, and popular music receive special attention.

Our faculty consists of ethnomusicologists, music historians, theorists, and composers.

Students can utilize diverse specialized resources such as: analog and digital piano laboratories, piano practice units, ethnomusicology and jazz collections, York's Sound & Moving Image Library, and popular music archives.
