York's Art History program delves into Indigenous, Canadian, and immigrant artistic expressions across historical and contemporary periods within worldwide art contexts. Paired with the Curatorial Studies Diploma, this Master's program stands out as one of Canada's most sought-after degrees for those pursuing careers in art museums. The curriculum blends academic study with hands-on experience in collections, exhibitions, and programming, supplemented by teaching roles and external internships at leading museums, publications, and art collections. Our graduate studies provide distinctive resources that foster independent, faculty-guided art historical investigation.
Typically completed in two years of full-time enrollment, the Art History M.A. also welcomes part-time applicants, particularly those with relevant background knowledge. Students are advised to consider full-time attendance during their initial program year whenever feasible.
