The Historical, Theoretical, and Critical Studies of Psychology Program stands among a select group of graduate psychology programs worldwide, offering specialized research opportunities in psychology's history, theoretical frameworks, and critical perspectives.
Program participants utilize diverse research approaches, from analyzing original texts and archival documents to employing oral history techniques, discourse analysis, thematic examination, and digital history tools like network analysis.
Students can work with primary and adjunct faculty specializing in various domains, including race/ethnicity and gender studies, cognitive and behavioral psychology, developmental and clinical psychology, digital history, statistical methodology, and philosophical psychology, who serve as advisors and committee members.
Program faculty actively pursue research funded by grants and hold leadership positions in numerous national and international organizations focused on the history and theory of social and behavioral sciences. A regular colloquium series showcases expertise from York University, the Toronto region, and global scholars in psychology's historical, theoretical, and critical dimensions, along with science and technology studies and the philosophy of science.
