Osgoode's Doctor of Philosophy in Law is an intensive full-time research program primarily tailored for those aspiring to academic careers, typically spanning three to four years.
Study group participants engage in weekly discussions of scholarly articles within their groups. These gatherings serve as platforms for intellectual exchange rather than formal coursework. For PhD candidates, these groups fulfill the same function as comprehensive exams in other graduate programs.
Doctoral students must complete one credited study group during their first or second year, followed by a non-credit participation year while maintaining full-time enrollment. Five specialized options are available based on research focus and course offerings:
Regulation and Governance
Law and Economic Relations
Theoretical Perspectives in Legal Research
Law and Social Justice
Law in a Global Context
