The program's most distinctive feature is its remarkable interdisciplinary approach. We view language as both a symbolic system people understand and a tool they employ daily. While students and professors may lean toward particular perspectives, Western's Linguistics program isn't strictly "formal linguistics," "applied linguistics," nor simply a combination of both. Rather, it represents a vibrant integration of diverse frameworks and methodologies, strengthened by collaborations with related fields: anthropology, information science, communication disorders, language education, philosophy, and psychology.
Applications won't be reviewed for candidates focusing primarily on these areas: ESL instruction, Translation, Teaching Methods, or Applied Linguistics without theoretical linguistic foundations.
