The Linguistics Department stands out in the Faculty of Arts as the sole provider of a Master of Science degree. Prospective MSc candidates can select between two pathways: a course-focused or thesis-focused program. Both tracks mandate completion of two core courses - LING 601 (Phonology I) and 602 (Seminar in Syntax) - along with a designated number of elective courses selected in collaboration with the student's advisor. These electives should align with the student's academic background and research interests, with LING 501 (Research Project Seminar) being particularly recommended for incoming MSc students. Prior to finalizing course selections, students must consult either their supervisor or the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies. The program allows flexibility to transition between the thesis and course options during study, though such changes require prior discussion with the advisor or Associate Chair.
