Western University offers and cultivates an interdisciplinary approach to environmental and sustainability education and research. Cross-disciplinary collaboration is fundamental to environmental studies, with courses drawing expertise from multiple faculties including Science, Engineering, Social Science, Arts and Humanities, Information and Media Studies, the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, the Richard Ivey School of Business, and the Faculty of Law. Students explore diverse perspectives on environmental challenges, covering topics from biodiversity conservation and water security to renewable energy, ecosystem management, climate-related hazards, and sustainable corporate strategies.
Students develop skills to bridge disciplinary divides in environmental communication and integrate knowledge from various fields to address practical problems. With a strong foundation in scientific disciplines—such as biology, chemistry, mathematics, earth sciences, GIS, and physical geography—Environmental Science students also gain exposure to complementary fields including anthropology, business administration, economics, Indigenous studies, philosophy, political science, human geography, and sociology.
