The Department of Visual Arts at Western University provides three specialized study paths: Art History, Museum and Curatorial Studies, and Studio Art. Students benefit from intimate class sizes and practical training in their selected discipline. Beyond traditional lectures and seminars, these programs incorporate immersive learning experiences such as practicums, internships, and visits to art galleries, museums, heritage locations, and cultural centers.

Undergraduate courses and senior-year practicums encourage creative exploration within nurturing, diverse settings. Studio practicum participants receive individual workspaces and continuous mentorship, culminating in a collaborative exhibition at a professional gallery. The program equips students with comprehensive skills in analyzing visual culture across various global historical and contemporary contexts. Learners collaborate with acclaimed faculty members, including renowned artists, art historians, curators, and expert technicians. Our distinguished professors include prominent Canadian and international scholars engaged in active research and artistic pursuits. Art History faculty publish with prestigious academic publishers, while Studio Art faculty exhibit at venues like the National Gallery of Canada and international showcases in cities including Vienna, Sydney, and New York. Recognitions include Distinguished University Professorships, the Hellmuth Prize, Sobey Award nominations, features in Canadian Art magazine, and multiple SSHRC grants.
