Examine the forces that influence your daily life as someone navigating gender in modern society. Our curriculum helps cultivate an analytical viewpoint considering elements like biological sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, socioeconomic status, and physical ability. You may discover your perspectives shifting as you employ these frameworks across academic disciplines and personal experiences. Our program showcases the growing scope of feminist scholarship, covering areas from gender theory and LGBTQ+ studies to health equity, legal rights, philosophical discourse, gendered violence, workplace equality, and women in creative fields.
The Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies department was formally created at The University of Western Ontario in July 2006, building upon the Women's Studies program founded in 1987. Operating across both Arts and Humanities and Social Science faculties, the department provides diverse degree options and advances feminist research through visiting scholars, lecture series, academic conferences, faculty discussions, and scholarly works. Students can also engage with our vibrant Women's Studies Student Council.
The Sexuality Studies program represents an interdisciplinary collaboration between Arts and Humanities and Social Science, coordinated through the Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies Department.
