The History Department examines past events to equip globally aware individuals with historical perspectives for addressing current and future issues. Our professors and students generate historical insights that demonstrate the significance of past developments. Their research spans multiple historical fields: Canadian studies, Digital history, Environmental Science/Medicine, Gender/Women's studies, Indigenous perspectives, International/Global affairs, Public History, Social/Cultural analysis, and War/Conflict studies. Many faculty members hold joint appointments with other academic departments.
For those interested in exploring historical knowledge, research techniques, and developing critical analysis skills for historical documents, the History Major offers an ideal path. This program teaches effective oral and written communication using historical disciplinary standards. Students can pursue an Honours degree by pairing History with another major (requiring at least a 70% average in both fields). This Double Major Honours program serves as excellent preparation for graduate studies in education, law, business, journalism, and related professional fields.
