Examine the forces that influence daily life through the lens of gender in modern society. Our curriculum helps cultivate an analytical approach considering elements like biological sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, racial background, socioeconomic status, and physical ability. These frameworks may fundamentally alter how you perceive other academic subjects and personal experiences. Our program showcases the growing spectrum of feminist scholarship, covering areas from gender theory to LGBTQ+ studies, reproductive health, legal frameworks, philosophical inquiries, gender-based violence, workplace equality, and women in the arts.
The Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies department was formally created at The University of Western Ontario in July 2006, building upon the Women's Studies program founded in 1987. As an interdisciplinary unit, it operates within both the Arts and Humanities and Social Science faculties. Students can pursue various degree options while benefiting from visiting scholar programs, an acclaimed lecture series, academic conferences, faculty discussions, and scholarly publications. The department also maintains an engaged Women's Studies Student Association.
