Our curriculum helps you cultivate an analytical viewpoint considering elements like biological sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, socioeconomic status, and physical ability. You may discover your outlook fundamentally changes as you employ these frameworks across academic disciplines and personal experiences. Our program showcases the growing scope of feminist scholarship, encompassing gender theory, LGBTQ+ studies, healthcare, legal matters, philosophy, gender-based violence, workplace equality, and women in the arts.
The Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies department was formally created at The University of Western Ontario in July 2006, building upon the Women's Studies program founded in 1987. As an interdisciplinary unit, it operates within both the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty of Social Science. Students can pursue various degree options while benefiting from visiting scholars, an acclaimed lecture series, academic conferences, faculty discussions, and scholarly publications. The department also maintains an engaged Women's Studies Student Council that fosters community.
