Discover every facet of stage production through this comprehensive creative program. Your learning environment is the Malaspina Theatre, an active performance space and cultural center. In this distinctive setting, you'll create events while honing your skills as either a performer, theatre technician, or both. Unlike many programs that force you to specialize, VIU lets you pursue both paths within a single diploma. You'll even have opportunities to use the theatre for personal creative projects. The department provides two-year diplomas in both Theatre and Technical Theatre. For those seeking a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre, VIU's programs transfer to universities nationwide, including the University of British Columbia and University of Victoria. All students begin with a shared foundational year before choosing their specialization.

The Theatre diploma immerses students in both practical theatre production and academic theory. You'll master transforming scripts into live performances, develop acting fundamentals like voice and movement techniques, and gain expertise in production design elements including sets, lighting, and costumes. The curriculum covers dramatic works spanning from early European classics to contemporary Canadian pieces, while emphasizing stage safety protocols. This full-time program culminates in a Theatre Diploma upon completion.

Designed to meet Canada's increasing demand for skilled technicians, the Technical Theatre diploma focuses on backstage expertise. Through hands-on learning, students acquire technical skills by working on diverse productions. The program combines theory and practice, covering areas like stage management, costume and prop creation, lighting systems, special effects, and theatre administration. Like its counterpart, this is exclusively a full-time program leading to a Technical Theatre Diploma.

Each year, the Theatre department stages multiple productions and welcomes professional touring companies, giving students valuable opportunities to collaborate with industry professionals.
