The Child and Youth Care Diploma Program
Prospective diploma students should apply to the Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care. During their first year, students must declare their intention to graduate with the Child and Youth Care Diploma. After completing the initial two years (60 credits including practicum), students qualify for the diploma.

This two-year program develops skills for working with individuals, families, caregivers, and small groups in diverse practice environments. Graduates will be prepared to collaborate with other professionals in multidisciplinary settings such as schools, community organizations, correctional facilities, and residential programs. The curriculum emphasizes Indigenous knowledge and cultural safety practices.

Available both full-time and part-time, successful completion of this two-year program (including practicum) leads to VIU's Child and Youth Care Diploma.

Qualification Requirements

Enrolment is limited. Students who meet or exceed the minimum admission requirements may not necessarily be admitted to the program.
To be eligible for admission at first year to the VIU Diploma program, students must have completed Grade 12 (or have mature student status), with a minimum of “C” in English 12 or equivalent.
To be eligible for admission at second year to the VIU Diploma program, students must have completed 30 university credits including completion of the Degree English Requirement and 6 credits of Human Development (normally CYC 111/112), and the following Child and Youth Care Courses (or equivalent of) CYC 100, 101, 152, and 165 or students must have a completed a recognized Human Services Certificate program (granted 30 credits maximum) that includes the English and Human Development and CYC courses or equivalency requirements as stated above.
The overall GPA of students will be a minimum of 2.33 (“C+”), calculated on the most recent 24 credits completed, and with a minimum “C+” in each of the individual courses previously identified for meeting admission requirements.

To meet the English language requirements for academic program, students must have completed:

VIU English Language Centre's - Successful completion of University Preparation Level 5
International Baccalaureate English A1/A2 - Higher Level (HL)/ Standard Level (SL) grade 3 or higher
IELTS 6.5 (with no band under 6.0)
TOEFL 550 (with no section under 56)
TOEFL iBT 88 (with no section under 20)
Pearson (PTE) 60 no section below 60
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English with a minimum Cambridge English Score of 176.
Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English with a minimum Cambridge English Score of 176.
