VIU's Bachelor of Education program equips future educators with essential skills for teaching in elementary or secondary schools. Over five years, participants develop diverse instructional techniques and professional competencies, gaining the qualifications needed to obtain BC teacher certification and launch their careers.
The program offers individualized support from experienced faculty members with K-12 classroom backgrounds, all committed to student achievement.
This comprehensive teacher preparation emphasizes the Principles of Teaching and Learning, incorporates extensive practicum experiences, and integrates First Peoples Principles of Learning. Aligned with BC's updated curriculum, the program emphasizes personalized learning approaches, environmental education, and Indigenous perspectives. Instruction centers on core competencies, key concepts, contemporary research, and reflective practice development. Graduates earn professional certification through the BC Ministry of Education's Teacher Certification Branch, qualifying them to teach in all BC schools.

The curriculum combines Education courses with studies in Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and Human Services. Students complete general electives primarily in the first two years, focusing on Education and Field Experience during the final three years. The program is available at Nanaimo and Cowichan campuses, with the Cowichan option offering deep integration of local First Nations knowledge. Note that Education courses and field placements don't operate during summer.

Participants can enhance their degree by pursuing Minors from other programs, provided they fulfill all requirements for both the Minor and Education degree. Those considering this path should consult with Education Faculty Advisors regarding degree completion and career impacts.

Students may enter at Year 1 or Year 3. The first three years blend general and pre-professional education, while Years 4-5 concentrate exclusively on elementary teaching preparation through specialized coursework and practicums. Those with prior post-secondary education might explore the Post Baccalaureate Bachelor of Education pathway.
