English Major graduates emerge with highly marketable abilities, such as analytical reasoning, investigative proficiency, collaborative skills, and exceptional written communication.
VIU's Bachelor of Arts in English, whether as a major or minor, immerses students in diverse literary disciplines, historical contexts, methodological perspectives, and theoretical debates while fostering a deep comprehension of cultural and literary themes.
For those passionate about literature and writing, selecting an English major or minor for your BA is an excellent choice. VIU's program also includes an Honours track. Literary studies represent an exploration of culture—examining narratives, beliefs, values, and human experiences that define our personal identities and social connections. The English Department's curriculum enhances students' literary appreciation, cultural insight, and analytical abilities while refining their capacity to articulate ideas powerfully through speech and writing, including specialized instruction in composition, rhetoric, and oral presentation.
Undergraduate courses are structured across three tiers: introductory (100-level covering foundational writing, literary analysis, and cultural studies), intermediate (200-level including advanced composition, literary traditions, and discussion-based seminars), and advanced (300-level focusing on specialized writing, cultural contexts, and interdisciplinary studies).
Select 400-level courses provide targeted professional preparation for careers or postgraduate studies, available concurrently with 300-level coursework.
Most English courses at all levels mandate supervised examinations to verify students meet departmental standards, particularly in 100-300 level classes.
Important: The department recommends maintaining at least a "C" (2.33) GPA in introductory and intermediate courses as prerequisite for upper-level English studies.
