The Young People's Texts and Cultures specialization explores literature and media designed for youth, examining various formats including toys, games, illustrated books, digital content, films, and live performances. The Department features a diverse community of Indigenous, Black, Asian, Jewish, Arab, and Global South academics, authors, staff, and students—some with firsthand colonial and occupied territory experiences—who focus on Critical Race Studies, Genocide Studies, Settler Colonial Studies, Decolonial Studies, Black Studies, and Indigenous Studies. Numerous faculty members are committed antiracist educators working toward substantive equity in their teaching approaches. These disciplines inherently involve analyzing both historical and contemporary settler colonial structures and genocidal practices.
