The University of Winnipeg's Criminal Justice program examines societal approaches to addressing unlawful behavior and violations, encompassing various aspects of policing, judicial processes, and rehabilitation systems. This interdisciplinary social science program equips students with robust analytical, writing, and investigative capabilities.
Our curriculum delivers both historical context and contemporary studies on Canada's justice framework, explores theories behind criminal behavior, establishes social theory fundamentals, examines law's societal function, and evaluates diverse viewpoints on disciplinary measures and societal regulation. Learners are encouraged to critically analyze concepts of justice and its optimal implementation. They'll gain expertise in ongoing justice system discussions, including balancing public safety with legal protections, punitive measures versus rehabilitative approaches, miscarriages of justice, systemic reform versus dismantling, colonial legacies, discrimination issues, restorative approaches, governmental authority boundaries, negative consequences of justice system involvement, challenges faced by victims, and official reactions to nonconformity.
